"One Change"

And the winner is: Sarah Britton!
Yes, she is my inspirational icon from 2012.

Here is the TEDtalk from Sarah, the author of My New Roots.

Enjoy!

NO monkfish!

DO NOT eat this week's food in season.

The reason is simple: it's highly endangered!
Check more here.

I guess I was way too tired to tell you how responsible you should be.
Other species with the same common name can be found here.

Need a lift?

No!
Do it yourself!

I try not to spread the bad mood, but I hate silly, empty-head, full-of-laziness human beings!

Moooooooove!

15.8.12

Declaration of independence

I hereby officially declare I have drowned in work.

And in cinema.

And in photography.

And in literature.

And in food.

And in science.

And in music.

And in concerts.

And in cooking from scratch.

And in … what was I saying?

And a "barbecue" a long time ago. What a waste of materials.

Workaholic #2

There are times when I cannot separate work from personal life. Twice! How could I? How could anyone – who is deeply committed to his/her own work – disconnect?

There is no switch on/off. You look outside and see triggers of brainstorms that eventually lead to a great idea. All that colour. All that… wait a minute! Yes, that’s it! Life starts gradually. It isn’t math we are dealing with here. It’s life! Thus, a biologist will never be able to either see 0’s or 1’s.

There is so much more out there, yet so simple, it hurts!

And I miss it, just like the deserts miss the rain...

Overnight

I hold them tight, so they don’t fall.

It’s too windy out there.

This is a version #2 of this one.

12.8.12

North Atlantic

It is unique. In its greatness I have swam, wander, and rely.
I am proud of being part of it.

North Atlantic, a vast source of life.
What are you doing to protect your ocean? Our ocean?

Speaking of which, check this out.

Crazy features

Outliers, as in any model fitting technique, may turn your life into a living hell. What can you do to avoid them? Nothing. You just need to learn how to deal with them, and that’s it.

On the other hand, attending police auctions may be fruitful. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to find a good fit, you will feel relieved that you are promoting recycling. Yes, because that is what it is: objects being reused.

And the winner is (was)... Who knows? Maybe I will be posting some shots of my new beauty soon, when I get it.

30.7.12

Engaging challenges

Sprout your own words and turn them into a beautiful plant.

There are so many empty heads surrounding me that I always feel the need to grow something myself, even if it is just a single push to lentils to start sprouting. It’s so easy and goes perfect in salads. “What are you eating?”, they ask. I try to answer politely, but irritates me to try to teach something to full-of-nothing-heads. Is it worth it?

29.7.12

“Don’t panic, it’s organic”

And I do almost panic when I see so many wrong food-wise choices being made. I get nervous, seriously. So many diseases (including depression) we could be avoiding just by eating properly.

Unfortunately, these gorgeous examples of food are not mine. I wish they were. I wish I could grow such delicious ingredients for my daily life. I had the opportunity to try them, but that was all.

Whenever you are experiencing some sort of craving for a terrible choice, think again. I am sure there is a much better (and healthier) alternative.
Explore! Go wild! Be free!

26.7.12

I’m only happy when it rains

Ok, maybe not. I am confident to say I am pretty adaptable.

24.7.12

What's on the menu?

So, this week food of the season is plaice (a.k.a. solha em Português, or rødspætte Dansk).

Enjoy this one on the grill, oven, or whatever you fancy. Grill some veggies of the season, and a berries ice-cream and I promise you will make a lot of friends (in case you do not have enough).

You may check here all the information about this species. For those of you who are not familiar with fish species, save this link: FishBase is our encyclopaedia.

21.7.12

The art of BIking

Today, I am looking for something special.

And yes, that little person climbing up is me. I reached the top.

Another first time. Challenge accomplished!

19.7.12

Hello, my name is

Tomorrow I will be on the phone with Dr. Daniel Pauly. Can you believe this?

He is one of my heroes when it comes to Fisheries Ecology. I just hope I do not blow everything up.

I miss the Norwegian nature.
So full of everything you have ever wished to experience.

16.7.12

What's in season?

Have you been filling up your fridge/counter with foods that are in season?

Before you go out shopping for food, check this valuable website. They launch a list of foods in season. Of course this would depend on the country you living in, and whether these products are produced in your town or surroundings – a.k.a. locally. This way, you make sure you are eating healthier, helping your neighbour, and your country’s economy.

Eat local! Eat organic! Eat whole foods!

These beers are prized-winner beers, produced in Denmark. With elderflower, a beloved ingredient up here.

Check also the “10 ways to Eat Greener” by Whole Living. Also, try to aim to a maximum of 10-15 products per week and use ONLY those products (plus products that can stay in the counter/fridge for weeks to months). This is an extremely good tip.

12.7.12

Break down

When something extremely useful breaks down, what to do?

This was the case of Mr. Envisat. Its mission lasted for 10 years, but has recently come to an end.

Sad news. Let us hope there will be a better replacement.

I am keeping my good mood and planning some new approaches.
No worries!
