2 rolls of Ilford HP5+, 400 ISO, 120 mm, B&W
1 roll of Fujifilm Superia, 400 ISO, 135 mm, Colour (UPS!!!). No worries, it works anyway.

I can’t wait to scan all this.

And ALL the reasons why I am giving up on sugar coming soon.

Sax

Not enough light coming in: underexposed.
Too much light coming in: overexposed.

Tomorrow means spending the afternoon in the dark room. I can’t hold myself on contentment.

And the jazz mood is on.

Old choices made easy

“And my soul, from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted – nevermore

Let it rest, let it go. Better days are now prevailing. If we compare to previous doubtful phases, where whether to follow aquatic science was a big decision to consider. I still remember what made me come here. I still remember how many choices I wrote on the list where we were supposed to write 6. I wrote one. ONE! It was either this or nothing. Why should I consider doing something else? This is what I wanted. This is what I still want. And this is what I am doing. I am glad I made this choice, for I think it was the right one.

Those who think their paths are somehow being misconducted, try to focus on your goal. If that does not help, maybe it is time to change. I keep repeating this, because I think it is extremely important: if you are not happy with what you are doing, change it!

“Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost”

We are lost anyway. The point is that if we all dance our bodies out, we will definitely be happier.

Try it! The body works, the mind follows. Or is it the other way around? Sigh. This is exactly what I love in dance.

Small fish

“They eat according to their size.”

Is this news to you? We all eat according to our size. At least that is what we are supposed to eat. Greedy people should be aware that their stomach may explode for all the food they are trying to squeeze in.

Our nutritional requirements are usually proportional to our size. Therefore, smaller means lower demands, thus being able to avoid overexploiting the sources. Specially the natural sources. The Earth is supposed to fully accommodate all species living within. However, if we adopt an unnatural behaviour, such as consuming more and more, the outcome is obvious. The sources supply will no longer meet mankind demands.

Relax: check!

8 movies, 3 days. What is left to do? Work my way up.

There is no such thing as laziness here. To cultivate the mind is definitely required for a healthy life style.

I am ready now. Bring them in!

Pairs of light

A tripod. A 135 mm film. Shot once. Shot twice.

I am a big fan of double exposures. This is what I’ve got out of the blue, which made it much more interesting.

La Traviata

There is no room for everything. The days should be longer.

I either skip sleeping, or leave one of my beloved ones behind. Hard to choose, but it has to be done.

Focus is needed! Organization is harder when one longs for more than is actually able to perform.

Planetary boundaries

During the recent years, the term sustainability has been used quite broadly. As a biologist, I seldom think of the role of people within a society. My definition of sustainability is, therefore, linked to resilience of a group. This group may refer to a population, a single species, a community, a region, and others. But before, I would like to focus on something else (still related to this subject).

According to the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC), there are nine planetary boundaries. These refer to border definitions of natural ecosystems, including humans (yes, we are supposedly a part of nature too). For the sake of misunderstandings, I decided to summarized them in a single sentence each, so I can refer to them in the future. I give really short descriptions, with a non-scientific language, just to keep it simple. I apologize to scientists who read this.

1) Stratospheric ozone layer - Filters out ultraviolet radiation from the sun that could otherwise increase incidence of skin cancer in humans, and damage terrestrial and marine biological systems.

2) Biodiversity - Number of species within a specific region that, when reaches 0 (zero in that specific region) for a specific species, this species is then extinct in that region.

3) Chemicals dispersion - Emissions of persistent toxic compounds that may reduce fertility and permanent genetic damage.

4) Climate Change – Alterations in temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, among many others, that have diverse effects within the Earth system.

5) Ocean acidification – The oceans absorb around a quarter of the CO2 produced, rising its acidity, and reducing carbonate ions, which is essential for shell and skeleton formation in organisms such as corals, and some shellfish and plankton species.

6) Freshwater consumption and the global hydrological cycle - This cycle, as a key to keep the planet within the climate boundary, is, however, strongly affected by climate change, and is dramatically decreased by human consumption.

7) Land system change – The transformation of forests, wetlands, and other vegetation types in agricultural land reduces biodiversity, affects water flows, and biogeochemical cycles (such as the one of carbon).

8) Nitrogen and phosphorus inputs to the biosphere and oceans - Human activities convert huge amounts of N2 from the atmosphere into reactive forms, which pollute waterways and coastal zones, are emitted back to the atmosphere in various forms, or accumulate in the terrestrial biosphere.

9) Atmospheric aerosol loading - Without aerosol particles in the atmosphere, we would not have clouds, by reflecting incoming sunlight back to space, which may keep the planet at “living temperatures”.

I hope it is understandable now.

I did it! Ok, not everything, but I am trying. I have achieved quite a lot for such a short time.

My lady Di

I already told you I am not addicted.

14.2.12

Because I don’t care, my Valentine is better than yours!

The sun was shinning and the company was perfect. The concert was amazingly good and I managed to relax.

The English country side is so “warm” and welcoming, that I found myself “living the dream”. Traveling by train is one of my favourite ways of transporting myself to the locals’ routines.

Lunch with a very old friend. An ice-cold beer and a lot of talking. Great weekend!

“I am on my way back home.”

You know where it is.

7.2.12

Ponds, lakes, rivers

I feel a little bit claustrophobic here. Lets move back to my dear oceans, please.

Getting there

I am slowly getting somewhere. Results are being processed and I am glad to see it is working.

A goal was presented to me and I deliberately moved all my efforts towards it. Nicely done, Miss!

Appreciation

ap·pre·ci·a·tion

[uh-pree-shee-ey-shuhn]

1. gratitude; thankful recognition: They showed their appreciation by giving him a gold watch.
2. the act of estimating the qualities of things and giving them their proper value.
3. clear perception or recognition, especially of aesthetic quality: a course in art appreciation.
4. an increase or rise in the value of property, goods, etc.
5. critical notice; evaluation; opinion, as of a situation, person, etc.

Are you appreciating?

12.1.12

Contrasting results

Whenever there is a non-reliable product, one should not give up!

Instead, one should look for similar products and “fill-in the gaps”.

Interpolation may not be the most-reasonable approach, since there might be a lot of assumptions. I came across with some neat approaches on this issue. Do not get overwhelmed by the lack of data is definitely the first step. Then, one just needs to relax, take a deep breath, and dig in!

Pond fishing

Funny enough, they were there.

Great days!

2.1.12

Restart

Deep inside, every single one of us is sure that our past expectations will be overcome by today’s achievements. No one is exactly sure how to reach the point-of-no-return (PNR. Ok, for the sake of misunderstandings, let us add one more letter, PONR), yet everyone makes wishes on the last days of the year. Whether you are a truly believer, or an atheist, you may easily find yourself wrapped into this state of mind.

In any case, allow me to suggest the following: keep your objectives in mind, and try not to diverge from them. If you do, make sure you find the most likely explanations for that/those deviation(s). Most of the times, there is no single path to achieve a single objective, so bear that in mind.

Fresh start, fresh new beginning! Maybe not, but who cares? My point being: greatly distancing yourself from what you really are may end up in another person, which is not a good sign. Unless you exactly wish to completely change yourself, you should aim at the latter and avoid the former. Every human being requires a goal in life, in order to fully embrace the art of “living the life” (redundancy). To a certain extent, even if unconsciously, everyone has at least one goal in life. One may not know now what is his/her goal, but it does not mean it is not there.

I have mine. You have yours. Let us just hope they are not mutually exclusive.
