19.7.12

Hello, my name is

Tomorrow I will be on the phone with Dr. Daniel Pauly. Can you believe this?

He is one of my heroes when it comes to Fisheries Ecology. I just hope I do not blow everything up.

I miss the Norwegian nature.
So full of everything you have ever wished to experience.

Off I go

See you in some days, folks!

Tomorrow is the big HUGE day and then I am on my break. Our brake!

20.6.12

Analogue vs digital

Shoot analogue!
You won’t regret it.

Look how cool it could have been in this one.

Regardless to say that I inherit a very neat camera, which is pushing my limits. I am crazy in love with it. Here are some reasons why.

I am an amateur, I am quite aware of it. No worries!

6.6.12

Clean & clear

Random snacks.
Random places.
Random people.

Randomly chosen links. Wrong choices.

Do not try to be creative with one’s mouth and stomach. Do not play around with their food habits. Some just don’t have the guts to face changes.

6.5.12

Supporting the locals

Wolffish, narwhal whale meat and skin, snow crab, musk deer, and what else?

Everything wild. There are few populations living with such a sustainable life style. I am glad I supported it, even if just for a little while.

Sharing food and glasses of wine. Listening to research achievements in climate change impacts on Arctic regions. Filtering all the relevant information. Getting enough breakthroughs for the next month. And preparing for coupling everything together. What come out? A carbon budget.

Maybe I’ll show you next time. For now, I just need to focus and get prepared for another course. A more theoretical one though. Even though we are already just like a community, I miss home and simples meals.

1.5.12

Sailing, sampling, surveying

Out in the sea. Loads of ice.

CTD goes first. (This one can never fail!) Check chl-a maximum and set the depths profile. One tow, two tows.

Poor fishermen. Trapped by the icebergs, or shall I say floating ice plaques?

Finally “home”, some warm food. A glass of wine and go back to work.

I wonder and wander

I wondered whether salmon and coconut milk could go well together. The answer is yes. Some vegetables, spinach pasta, and good to go.
This was the evening I also tried home-made smoked tuna. And here is another twist to it: home-made smoked tuna with mint. Yes, mint.

The technique to smoke fish at home was learnt at a workshop/seminar about the upcoming EU’s Common Fisheries Policy, during the European Fish Week in Lisbon (also here), on the World Oceans Day. This was an event organized by OCEAN2012. There was a chef teaching some alternative recipes to try with more sustainable aquatic resources, such as sardines and anchovies.

OCEAN2012 is an alliance of organizations dedicated to transforming European fisheries policy to stop overfishing, end destructive fishing practices and deliver fair and equitable use of healthy fish stocks.

So, even if I seem to be wandering, keep in mind that I do focus on sustainability! There is always a better approach, or, at least, an optimal.
